Cyclone Michaung: Odisha Schools, Anganwadi Centres to Remain Closed Tomorrow

As the cyclonic storm Michaung continues to cause menace in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, several cities face massive water logging triggered by heavy rain. Keeping in mind the situation, the Office of the Collector and District Magistrate, Gajapati, has announced that all primary, upper primary, high school, and anganwadi centres will remain closed on December 6, 2023. The announcement comes after the possibility of heavy rains brought on by Cyclonic Storm Michaung over the Bay of Bengal.

“In view of possible heavy rainfall due to cyclonic storm ‘MICHAUNG’ over Bay of Bengal, all the Primary, Upper Primary, High School and Anganwadi Centre shall remain closed on December 6, 2023.” reads the official notification from the Office of the Collector and District Magistrate, Gajapati.

As per reports, the storm initially moved towards the coastal side of Tamil Nadu and has now started to proceed towards Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. It is likely to make landfall on the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla, today, December 5. The death toll due to the Cyclonic Storm Michaung rose to eight.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a yellow warning for heavy rain in specific locations. The alert includes one or two locations in the districts of Ganjam, Puri, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada on December 6. Fishermen are also advised to avoid going deep into the sea along and off the Odisha coast from December 4 to December 6.

Meanwhile, with Cyclone Michaung wreaking havoc behind it, schools in four districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu Districts, as well as Krishna and NTR districts of Andhra Pradesh, will remain shut today, December 5, 2023. Due to the Cyclonic Storm, all educational institutions, schools, colleges, and government offices in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu Districts, including the Offices of Public Undertakings and Corporations, Banks, Boards, and Financial Institutions, will be closed today.
